Museum De Casteelse Poort is als zelfstandige stichting opgericht in 1988. Het initiatief daartoe kwam van de historische vereniging Oud Wageningen. Het museum is ingeschreven in het register van erkende musea. Bestuur en medewerkers zijn vrijwilligers. De gemeente bekostigt het gebouw om de vrijwilligers in staat te stellen het museum.
